DESCRIPTION:This panel brings together original studies from emerging schol
 ars on recent Vietnamese migration to extend debates about illegality, agen
 cy and precarity across different/overlapping migration regimes. Contempora
 ry labour migration unfolds within an increasingly unequal and financialise
 d international political economy, accompanied by the recent rise in anti-i
 mmigrant sentiment and paralleled by increasing restrictions on (and demoni
 sation of) irregular migration. Meanwhile, increasing inequalities within V
 ietnam promote ‘cultures of migration’, as those excluded from the benefits
  of economic development see their only hope of ‘catching up’ in labour emi
 gration. By comparing the experiences of Vietnamese migrants in different c
 ountries and travelling via more or less precarious routes, this panel will
  shed light on the perspectives, tactics and outcomes of marginalised actor
 s in navigating often oppressive and exploitative structures within the mig
 ration industry.
