Emerging from an extensive se t of historiographical turns (transnational, imperial, global), transimperi al history’s main aim is to de-isolate histories of empires from their nati onal historiographies. It aims to do so by critically analyzing cooperation s, conflicts, and connectivity in the spaces between and beyond imperial bo undaries (Hedinger & Hée, 2018). With formal colonies of British, Dutch , French, Spanish, American, Portuguese, and Japanese empires, and informal interactions with many other imperial powers, one can argue that colonial histories of Southeast Asia are fertile ground for transimperial approaches . It is therefore surprising that during the last decade’s blossoming of th is field, the number of transimperial histories discussing colonialism in S outheast Asia have been relatively scarce and remain somewhat fragmented.\n This panel brings together scholars researching transimperial connections b etween different Southeast Asian colonial contexts, or those stretching bey ond Southeast Asia into the wider world. While aiming for a diversity in th emes, geographies, time periods, and types of connections, the papers prese nted in this panel will collectively reflect on how transimperial approache s can be complementary with regional approaches in Southeast Asian history. At the same time, the panel’s concluding discussion will critically engage with the limitations of the transimperial approach, as such approaches may run the risk of re-affirming the centrality of European historical narrati ves in Southeast Asian historiography. Participants are therefore specifica lly invited to reflect on how transimperial approaches can integrate decolo nial perspectives and give sufficient attention to the agencies of local po pulations in challenging, resisting, or appropriating such transimperial co nnections.
