Against t he backdrop of the genocide in Gaza, the panel shows how understanding Pale stine and Southeast Asia’s dual subjugation to the violence of capitalism a nd empire is necessary for grasping the catastrophes of the present. Fossil empire looms large in the destruction of Palestine (as Andreas Malm argues ), where the genocide in Gaza reflects a history of colonization and resour ce extraction that starts in the nineteenth century. Likewise in Burma/Myan mar. There, Britain’s steam-based, hence coal-based, naval dominance powere d British conquest and extraction—before Burma’s postcolonial government, l ike Thailand’s government later, built close relations with Israel as kindr ed state-building projects engaged in counter-insurgency. Today, Israeli ar ms exports are central to Israel’s diplomacy in Myanmar and the Philippines , where brutal counter-insurgencies reinforce ruthless authoritarian politi cs. In Myanmar and Laos, Chinese- and US-backed oil, gas, and hydropower pr ojects have become critical revenue sources, driving displacement and dispo ssession while tying Southeast Asia into imperial formations that are under writing genocide in Gaza. In the Philippines and Thailand, care-giving, sol diering, and counter-insurgency reflect and rework the history of settler m ilitarism in the US and Palestine. In Israel, Thai agricultural workers hav e faced considerable danger—not least as hostages in Gaza—as a vulnerable m igrant community imported to displace Palestinian labor. The Rohingya genoc ide has provoked stark comparisons between Myanmar and Palestine, while act ivists and militants in Myanmar, West Papua, Mindanao, and Palestine have f ramed their struggles as interconnected. In an important sense, moreover, P alestine is today’s Vietnam (as Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi argues): a spark fo r international protest and solidarity, grounded in militant commitment to decolonization. This spark reflects a long history of mutual inspiration be tween the freedom fighters of Palestine and Vietnam. At stake more broadly, even, are the deep historical linkages between the Middle East and Southea st Asia across the Indian Ocean world.\nThese are some of the linkages betw een Palestine and Southeast Asia that this panel aims to examine. These lin kages cover histories and processes related to colonization and resource ex traction, state diplomacy, the arms trade, labor relations, settler militar isms, genocides and dispossession, and international solidarity. We also we lcome work on other areas of interconnection across empire(s) between Pales tine and Southeast Asia. Tracing entangled forms of destruction between the se locations, this panel argues that Palestine and Southeast Asia are subje ct not to equivalent forces but shared processes, which make for similariti es but also differences. Still, shared subjugation suggests the outlines fo r possible solidarities—in some cases, renewed solidarities—between the peo ples of Palestine and Southeast Asia. The destruction of Palestine is the d estruction of Southeast Asia. Or as one group of Palestinian freedom fighte rs put it in 1970, “Vietnam to Palestine: one struggle, many fronts.” URL:https://euroseas2026.org/panels/the-destruction-of-palestine-is-the-destruction-of-southeast-asia-or-imperial-entanglements-in-genocidal-times DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Madrid:20260903T120000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/Madrid:20260903T133000 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
