This panel, focusing on priva te spheres and peripheral positions, aims to shed new light on modern Sino- Southeast Asian exchanges within the context of national struggles and the Cold War in the twentieth century.\nRevolution, in its multiple meanings an d contexts, has been an overwhelming presence in the region during this per iod. Yet, how did such a grand narrative shape family lives at the margins of power – for example, female guerilla members along the Thai-Malaysian bo rder, or Southeast Asian children relocated to China because of their paren ts’ Communist involvement in the regional Cold War? On the other hand, how did the evolving concept of Southeast Asia among emerging Chinese revolutio nists in the early decades, and everyday survival strategy by former soldie rs stranded in mountains at the junction of newly formed Southeast Asian st ates in the later decades, reflect a collective anxiety about positing them selves within a precarious and changing world order?
