The imperial commercial and geopolitical interests found themselves refle cted in the military might of the European navies but as well in the subtle efforts of their consuls, frequently advocating a softer advance towards t he local powers than their military counterparts.\nBases on the results of the successful Spanish national project Foreign Consuls in the Philippines and the Sea of China (19th century) (PID2019-106311GB-I00, 2020-2024) and a t the beginning of a new project of the conveners, Transimperial Encounters in the Philippines. Sovereignty, Conflicts and Interactions, 1762-1885 (PI D2024-161892NB-I00), the ideas is to debate the engagement of international consuls in Southeast Asia.\nThe panel will focus on three particular empir es and their consular representation in the Philippines, namely, Great Brit ain, France, and Germany, all of which had a peculiar interest in the regio n, each of them with a very different viewpoint and background. As a counte rpoint, the forth paper will address the consular correspondence between th e Spanish Philippines and British Singapore and Hong Kong. By examining the se imperial interactions, the panel aims to illuminate how colonial agents, networks, and circulations of knowledge shaped the region’s shared histori es. The panel format will allow for a fruitful discussion and give the oppo rtunity for guests to actively participate in the debate.
