Recent anti-corruption protes ts in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Nepal echo long-standing political an d socio-economic issues and grievances and seem to converge on popular part icipation that go beyond or build upon the limits of organized blocs’ reach and seem to push for a radical break from bureaucrat-capitalist dominance. In Europe, certain left-wing and right-wing populist groups are able to ca pitalize people’s valid economic grievances - usually related to weal th inequality and/or defunding of social services (the collapse or thinning out of the welfare state) - to gain seats in parliament and expand their o rganizations, and in many countries, Gaza becomes a rallying point for broa der though looser movements to reappear and shake and put pressure on the U S-led international system. In a number of cases, ecological movements seem to converge with socialist or at least economically progressive ones in de manding for a better world. The overlapping issues raised by various 21st c entury protest movements call for comparative approaches for a better and d eeper understanding of common themes. Within these contexts, this panel int ends to analyze, explain, discuss, and elaborate on issues, convergences, n arratives, and prospects of these 21st century protest movements, preferabl y using comparative approaches.
